Default 4.8 to 5.7?

there was a thread something like "everything youd want to know about ls1's" or something that said you could safely bore out a 4.8 or 5.3 to be a 5.7. I was wondering if someone could elaborate on this a little more, like what has to be changed, etc. and also how much will that even cost?

I think you can bore a 4.8 to a 5.3 and a 5.3 to 5.7 not really sure but i think it could be done.

A 4.8L can be turned into a 5.7L. A 4.8L and a 5.3L share the same bore.. The difference is the stroke.

You can actually go a little more than the LS1(5.7) stock 346 cu. If you use a 6.0 crank. I actually know 2 people personally that are doing this. On is using the 6.0 crank the other a LS1 crank. Actually one of them is using my stock 4.8 block.

any idea how much this whole process costs for all parts or is it worth more just buying a crate engine?

a 4.8 can be bored to a 5.7 bore, then you can get a stroker kit and build a 383. Just the stroker kit alone with pistons, and gaskets will run ya around 2200.00. The Eagle stroker kits are common. Then you have to have machine work done, have it built and engine pulled and replaced, so with labor total I would guess around 3500.00; of course you have to find a reputable builder too, if your not doin it yourself. In my opinion, this is not worth it unless you want to build a 550 RWHP + motor and run hi boost, and even then you havnt built the upper motor yet. If you want to be in the 400-500 RWHP, a stock 6.0 swap, upgrade just the upper engine (cam, springs, pushrods etc.), bolt ons and mild boost should get you there cheaper, the lower ends on these engines are tuff.

ok so thats a bad idea, whats involved in making a 4.8 into a 5.3? isnt it just replacing parts and no machine work? cost range? I'm sort of missing the cubes now...

I believe The block, heads and bore (3.779)are the same, the difference is the 4.8 has a 3.267" stroke and the 5.3 has a 3.662" stroke. The 4.8 uses flat top pistons and the 5.3 uses dish top pistons. The 4.8 uses different connecting rods too but I dont know the specs. I also believe that the 5.3 shares the same stroke and connecting rods with the the 6.0, but the block and heads (317) are different.

I dont know why you would go through that much trouble to go from a 4.8-5.3 when you can just do a 6.0 swap, but if you really want to do this I think it would be better to just buy a 5.3 short block pretty cheap for $200-500 and just transfer your heads and accerories over to that block.
