Default 4.8 or 5.3

i pulled an engine at the junk yard today so i can rob it of the manifold, fuel rails and engine covers. how do i tell if it is a 4.8 or 5.3? i pulled it and it still had all of the accessories on it but when i pulled them off the 5.3 was painted over with a yellow paint pen or something. does that notate that it is a 5.3? if it matters, it has 862 heads on it.

Did you pull it out of a truck? If so go get the vin number, but if now, then you'll have to pull a spark plug and try to see the top of a piston

a dish on the top of the piston is a 5.3, flat is a 4.8. since it came out of a suburban, i would guess its a 5.3.
