4.8 or 5.3

Get the 5.3. REsale is better. More cubes is better. You will start spending money just to get it to run like a 5.3. Forget the 6.0 and just throw some spray to it. A 150 shot is real fun on a scsb. I cant wait to get a locker so i can hook up and see what I am running. Oh yeah Hyde, that 170 shot is a blast and yes the bottle was low.

Chase71Z28, just get the 5.3 even if you are planning on upgrading to a 6.0. You will get > out of your 5.3 when you decide to do the swap. I have a 4.8 on my truck and I regret getting the it. At the time I did not know these trucks came with 2 v8's. With my mods I can beat a stock (ext cab)5.3 or at least I have not raced a one that can beat me. However, I did race a 02 5.3 extcab just with the HPP3 and it beat me.

Currently with my 4.8L I'll blow the doors off my buds 5.3L even though he's got some bolt-on's. To me the 4.8L revs quicker and seems to accept everything I've done to it very well.
5.3L would be a waste if you plan on taking it out. But if ya'll say its oh so great and powerful then go with it. I'm sure glad I didn't.

nah get whatever u can first. the guys who are seeing a difference in 4.8/5.3 are seeing a differnece in the GEARS. theres 2 gears also, the 3.42s and the 3.73s. i got some mods done to my 4.8 and i'd kill any 5.3 extcab. the single cab 5.3 is rare but it would beat me by a little.

If everything is equal between 2 trucks(gears, tires, cab config.)the 5.3 does have more torque. The 4.8 really is a good motor.I chose the 4.8 because that is what I could get with the 5 speed manual.I don't race my truck but use it to pull a travel trailer. After changing to 4.10 gears it pulls 6700lbs better than I ever thought a small motor could. If these trucks didn't come with the 5.3 we would probably still talk about how strong the gm trucks run.

I agree with hyperlite, gears play a major part in this. And every 4.8 I saw had 3.42s and most 5.3's unless it was a Z71. When I was shopping I drove a 5.3 ex cab with 3.42s and it didnt feel quite as quick as my 4.8 reg cab with 3.42's. But I did drive a 5.3 ex cab with 3.73's and it felt quicker off the line and in the lower RPM's. I ran my truck a few weekends ago with 1200 miles on it, and it ran a 16.2 bone stock with paper filter, it was 90 degrees outside with 90-95% humidity(louisiana, what ya expect). On that same night, a guy with a 2001 Chevy Ex Cab 5.3, 3.73's, HPP3, K&N FIPK, Flowmaster 40 duals ran a best of 15.7 and average of 15.9. But if you can find a 5.3 reg cab with 3.73's get it, but if I could do it over again, the only thing I regert is gettin a truck with 3.42's.

I had heard before that SCSB's with a 5.3 are rare but I see quite a few on this board and quite a few in my area... are they really that rare??? I know when I bought mine it was the only one I could find with a 5.3, 3:73's, fleetside. But I thought it was because there is less GMC's out there...

I don't know about "rare," but the 4.8 SCSB trucks are definitely easier to come by.
My personal opinion as a 4.8 owner...
GET THE 5.3! You'll regret it if you don't!
And get the 3.73's! They're worth it!
