Default 3.73 gears?

I just got some GM 3.73 gears. I currently have 3.42 gears, my question is will I need a new carrier for this swap? My truck is a 2002 GMC Sierra 2wd.

No carrier swap is necessary for that gear change.

I too am thinking of changing gears, is this something that us shadetrees can do? I am not affraid to do anything if I can get a good manual to help. Not sure if the gear setup is easy is there some special tool needed to know if the gears are making the right amount of contact? Also, how did you get the gears, dealer or salvage yard or other? Then I guess a programmer is needed to update things. Thanks
