Default 20w-50 oil to much?

I swaped the pick up tube oring and my pressure is a little better but I was told to try using 20w-50 oil in order to help boost the pressure. What are your thoughts on this. I have been using 10w-30 and I plan on swaping to royal purple or castrol syntec on my next change.

20w-50 is some THICK oil. woudl help boost pressure but adds a bit of resistance on all of your valvetrain components. i wouldnt go as extreme as that for now. can you get something a little more in between those. like 20w30 or 10w50 or something?

I thought the same thing, I know 20w50 is used in Diesels but It told to me by a friend that is why I asked. My pressure is only low when it is hot. When it is cold it is good.

Your engine will have an ever-so-slightly harder time moving with the thicker oil. I use 15w40 and have never had a problem. It was made for diesel engines and I get it for free where I work. This oil had extra detergents and my engine was CLEAN when I opened her up. Thicker oil is also better for high rpms I think.

well by GM specs its good but at cold Idle I am now at 40-45 and hot idle is about 30. Cruise is about 45 or so hot. Before I swaped in the 6.0 my 4.8 cruised at 50-60 or so with the ported oil pump. I only noticed this drop when my oil sending unit went out and I replaced it with an oriley sending unit vs a delco unit. The only reason the thicker oil was suggested was because the oil is thicker when it is colder, so a frind of mine suggested an oil that is a little thicker when hot. I really just want was is best for my new motor. I replaced the oil pick up tube oring last night and my oil pressure bummped a little higher and the liffter tap is now gone. I had the wrong oring on when I put the motor together, my new one I got from the dealer was almost twicw as thick as the one that came in my lower end gasket set which I also got from orileys. It was a black oring to where the one the dealer gave me was thick and red in color.

yeah... I totally forgot you were down there LOL... it does get pretty damn cold up here in VA though. (at least its cold to me)... I say you'd be fine running some 40W... 50 may be a little much. you think the sending unit may just be off some?

One thing many people misunderstand about using a heavier oil is that while oil pressure might go up that in no way means that your oil volume is increased. I've seen a few engines turn to **** because someone ran a heavier oil that made good pressure but actually starved the engine in certain areas for oil, due to its in ability to flow as much heavy oil as thing oil.
