180 STAT Question

I want to put a 180 thermo in my truck, was wondering if i can use the stock thermo housing? I have heard that i can't just put it in, i have to get the housing, is this true?

04 would be the same as gto/ ls2 motors.. just the thremo.

I put the 180 in my 04 Escalade and it went right in, no problems,
