Default 07' 5.3-DIY intake

I was told that the newer trucks have a better flowing airbox then previous models. Looking at the plastic tube that connects the TB to the MAF looks like a pretty good squeeze point. I was thinking that added a high flow drop-in and then a piece of piping wrapped in heat wrap without any unnecessary curves would be benificial.

My question is: Would that be worth the effort or should I just bite the bullet and get CAI?
