I was anti 80e too for a long time. Bought a $2400 "built" 60e and broke the output off TWICE! . So i finally decided to do the 80e swap. I bought a "good" core type of tranny, then all the parts to rebuild it. Had a local guy rebuild it for $200 and put a TG shift kit in it Still working out a converter issue, but Edge is going back and have a new Circle D on the way.

Ended up with about $2500-2800 in everything for the swap including new drive shafts, converter, everything. Should have just done it in the first place. Highway RPM is about 200rpm higher, and mileage is a bit less, but I don't know how much of that is the new blower/turbo setup as I did it about a week after the 80e swap. Still working out the bugs with everything, but overall I think I happy with it.

what type of output shaft did you have?

i think i'm gonna do some shopping around and see what i can find. i just can't seem to find very good deals around here for parts. they want an arm and a leg for everything.

80 and be done. That thing is too heavy, especially with plans of that much power.

what needs to be upgraded in the 4l80e to hold the power? and i have to get the input shaft piece for my np149 t-case. so you guys really like the 4l80e? when ya'll say it shifts better, whats better about it? i'm asking cause i don't know. i only road in one truck with a 4l80e, but it was all stock. my trans liked to bang on soft driving and slllliiiiid into gear. i almost lost a race because of it. slow shift and it once went to red line paused, and then shifted.

A shift kit alone is about all it takes. I've played with the line pressure tables too but that was more for shift feel.

TBSS 4l70e cyroed from GM, twisted 2 of them off at the exact same place right behind the front splines. One while brake boosting, the other on a 1-2 shift.

finish line has billet input and output on their web site now for the level 5(its an upgrade). i wonder how those would compare to what you had.

did you upgrade any hard parts in your 4l80e, or did you just get new clutches?

Ya, the 300m output shaft was the only thing my 60e didn't have. If I'd had it, probable would have just broke something else and at $500+ just for it, I thought the money was better spent upgrading to a trans that has about a 30% larger output shaft to start with.

I just put clutches, band, bushings, pistons, seals and a Shift kit in my 80e. Only real weak part my builder told me those trans have is the input and intermediate shafts. They have a oil hole in them that some times they will break at then pushed to extreme, but I opted not to put them in. 80e's are not very expensive and pretty easy to come by should I kill this one. And there damn tough with just a shift kit. Wasn't even gonna rebuild it, till I got it home and drained the fluid and was a little to dark, but not burn smelling for me.

well, i had to go with the max level 5 finish line with the billet parts. i would have went ahead with the 4l80e swap but i had to get a loan, and they wouldn't do it if i told them i had to send money to ten different places to do it. so we will see how far it goes. like i said i only run 10psi daily unless i come across something fast and i need high boost switch. like that viper i raced or the highly modded mustang. (viper did get me top end but i stomped his *** out of the hole).
i'm excited i've never had a trans i could rely on and that would shift like it was suppose to.
