what can a 4L65e hold up to?

Sorry about the last rant. I say save up for an FLT and be done with it. If you're truly sick like the rest of us and will be building a bigger and badder combo (1000rwhp/30mpg rides), then save up for the 80 conversion. Good luck.

far as the money issue, its really not a huge issue like i said i'm going to build it to hold more than im gona put to it, or thats the plan anyways, so i already know i'm looking at ALOT of money. and its not that i think i can do it as good or better than having FLT do it, its just the same as the rest of my truck, i like to do it myself, i like to know what is where and that its in right and ect. thats just how i am, i'd even buy one from FLT if i could stand there and watch them as they build it so i know everything about it and all. i'm not trying to sound cocky or anything, but from what im gathering, and the abuse i have put my truck through, all the parts i replaced when i rebuilt are still good, i know theres alot of measurements and clearance issues and everything i need to know, and im searching for all that info as we speak. and you may be right it may be better to go with the 80, but when i rebuilt the 80 in my 2500 i hated it compared to working on my 65, and i may look into geting a 80 instead of doing the 65, or i may do the 65 and get the 80 as a backup, i'm not 100% yet, if the 65 cant be built to do what i want then of course ill look into upgrading. , i do thank you for your input, not saying i'm not considering your opinion, cause i am, just have to decide the best route to take , it would make more sense to have people with a great rep like FLT has to build it, but at the same time its the issue i have about wanting to know everything and wanting to do it myself, i know where a 80 is for 600 so i may snag it up anyways, i'm geting a free 4L60e out of a 04 anyways so i can maybe get back on the road soon or just sell it or use it as a spare or something i have no clue yet,

I'm right there with you. I love to do my own work too. I'm very interested in what the limits are with one of these transmissions.
From what I can gather, the 3/4 clutch is the weak link once the trans is fully built (billet shafts, etc). It becomes somewhat of a maintenance item on high powered vehicles. I believe there are a few 8 seconds cars running around with 4L65-e's, but they are gone through each season typically........
I wonder what is the weak link when you add 2000lbs to the mix
Good luck either way you go.

Youre rant was true.
I am the same way as Bandit though
I know deep down in my gut, the smart thing to do would be to hold off and save the extra money for an FLT trans. However, I am not smart. If I was I would follow my gut and have FLT build me a trans
I like doing my own stuff. used to be a tech, I have a shitload of tools and it pisses me off that they just sit there. My wife has taken over every room in the house and started working her way in the garage. I said this is bullshit, this room is for taking **** apart and spilling oil everywhere and making loud nosies. youre not allowed in here anymore except to do laundry :nunchuk1:
she didn't catch the humor.
seriously though. I bought an 8ft bench and a holding fixture just to do this, I cant wait for all the parts to come in.
the only problem though is I feel like a dick asking Vince or the other guys that do it for a living for help. I would tell someone the same thing if they asked me, "have a pro do it"
anyway, it wouldnt be fun if we had other people do it for us all the time. Im a sucker for learning the hard way...more than once

I'm right there with you. I used to be a tech as well (still have my Master ASE and L1), but I'm by no stretch of the imagination a Pro at building transmissions. I've built about a dozen units in my life and they all worked great. However, building a unit that will hold up to the abuse we put them through in one of these trucks is a whole new game---lol!
It does suck because there are a lot of knowledgeable people out there that are willing to help but you don't want to take advantage of their good nature or bug the shi# out of them---lol! That's what is nice about these forums. You can post something up and if someone wants to help, they will.
Good luck with your build and make sure to post up.
Oh, and my wife is the same way----WTH!!!! LOL!

When I get all the parts in i will start a build thread in the projects section.
The women need to be stopped. No garage except for laundry. She would kill me thoug if she knew I was posting this.
I had a guest room for my models and rc cars. Now it has fitness equipment and I somehow ended up texturing and painting the walls teal, WTF
