if you bevel the tube to housing you should be able to do it with the 220. 1/4 isnt that hard to do with the right settings. i worked in a welding shop for 3 years and watched those guys do anything from .632 to 1 inch.

I turned my center section up on my truck. The u joint was pointing at the bottom of the bed. It tore the drive shaft loose and beat the tank up.

It did not hurt any of the internals just twisted on the axle tubes. The fix was to winch the center section back where it should be so it matched up with the axle perches. The shop that helped me welded the tubes to the center section and put a short bolt through the center section into the tube. One on the top and one on the bottom.

Tig With nickel rod is the way to go. Cleanlyness is Very important as is pre heating the cast Iron. The big thing That's missing from all these Rear end housing welding threads is The use of a rear end housing Line up fixture. Most people over look that, but it has been proven to make a difference espesialy in the drag racing community.... I know everone is always trying to do this type of stuff on a budget since a fully built rear end can be real expensive. You also have to consider What's the cost to fix something That you did not do right the first time...

Either Way good luck!!!

Thumbs up

There not cheap... A few Hundred dollars

Cheapest I have seen is some guy on ebay.

Now as far as the diffrent Line up tools go, the diffrent chassis shop supply houses can suppply you with what you need. I would try and at least get one that is a minumum of 1 1/2 inches or thicker If you plan on doing it a few times... If your only going to do it once, you might wanna try the one that is being sold on ebay... Stay away from kits made from tubing and bar stock... You want a perscion ground bar...

In No particular order...

Chris alston Line up bar kit and centering tool
Mark Williams Line up bar kit
Chassisengineering Line up bar kit and centering tool
Mittlerbrothers Line up bar kit and centering tool
Jerry Bickel Centering tool
A.R.T. Centering tool
Lamb Line up bar kit

There are a few other companies that sell the stuff too but I am not sure. I heard Dutchman axles sell a kit.
