Default Transmission Eperts, need help narrowing down 4l80e problems.

So I have a 4l80e that runs when first started for a mile or two then looses all forward and reverse until I cycle the ignition and wait a few minutes. Then it will either repeat the process or will just rev high (in 1st or 2nd?) and not shift and loose all gears again until the ignition is cycled again and wait a few minutes. If it was a sprag or other hard parts would it act this way? I was told it could be the filter/filters. Also if the valve body was loose or maybe a simple seal could it cause these problems? fluid levels are good

What does it do if you pull it down into manual 1st gear?

I would pull the pan and make sure the filter is not clogged or cracked sucking air.

if I pull it into manual first when i first start out it acts as normal, if I do it after i loose all forward and reverse I still dont have forward gears.

I think I might do that soon thanks Nonnie

Either you have a cheep filter in there that is sucking itself closed or is plug with debris. If you do replace the filter make sure the filter is made by filter tech or spx filtran. These are oem filters and the only ones I would use in this transmission. Vince
