I have a similar noise...have had it since i can remember. When i was getting my gears serviced last week i asked them and they checked all the u-joints and said it was fine. There explanation is just some slack in the drivetrain.

Glad to hear (sorry) that i'm not the only one. It sure is disturbing when it happens.
