They are not the same, one difference you already know about (tailhousing), and output shafts are different. You can use a 2wd tranny but you will have to change out the output shaft and housing to make it work.

ok this is an old post but at least im using the search button.....so lets say i can get a 2wd 80e how much would it cost and what would it take to put it in my 4wd truck???
im not too familiar on tranny so i dont know what the tailhousding is and out put shafts are!!!!
i think the 80e is longer correct so i would have to get a shorter front driveshaft.. would i need to shorten up my rear on as well....
the only reason im thinking this is because i can get a 2000 chevy 2500 2wd in running condition ( dads daily driver for work ) form my dads work for like at the very most $500..
