Default torque converter size?

What are the differences in a 12" converter vs. a 9.5 or a billet cover 10.5" converter? With the same stall rating.

ok, Im getting a performabuilt trans and TC and they have several listed. the 12" was the cheapest, for an extra 200 was the 9.5, and 200 more was the billet 10.5". getting something in the 2600 stall range. thanks

The difference is street manners and clutch size. The smaller the converter, the smaller the clutch and the looser it will feel on the street and the less efficient it will probably be... But the bigger converters have much more rotating mass and are heavier. The 12" converter is cheaper probably because it's a stock reworked TB converter with some adjustments and maybe a better clutch material. The 9 and 10.5" converters are usually billet and offer better resistance to the front cover flexing under extreme loads and pressures. A lot of billet covers are able to retain stock clutch capacity. Personally I would look into a multi disk converter. But they're more expensive... You get what you pay for and you've gotta pay to play... Two facts of this hobby.

Before you pick a converter, you really need to ask yourself what you want your truck to do best. Even though they all have the same rated stall speed, they definately will not all act the same.

Well Im building a fun street truck. Take it offroading every now and then, and tear up the track when I go. I have a set of WCCH stage 2 LQ9 heads waiting to go on, either the gt2-3 of tr blower cam, and down the road a radix. only wanting around 500 hp.

I'd look into a 10.5" multi disk around 2800rpm stall speed

And just so you're aware right off the bat.... You're not going to have the best of everything, build a truck that can hold it's own on the street and strip and have better offroad manners, or build a more street oriented setup that works ok offroad... You will **** away a LOT of money trying to make it do everything well.... It's a compromise. Pick what you want it to do best and keep in mind the other things and you'll be happier and have less grey hair... Trust me

I know I cant have the best of everything and thats not what I said. I want a fun street truck that I CAN do some light offroading with. Im not going to build a rock crawler. max tire size Ill put on my truck are 33s because I do not want to puta lift kit on it. But thanks for te replies. And I believe Sharpshooter is a lifted truck and he is running 12s with a similar set up that Im looking at doing. Except he has a procharger. Im going to call Chris at Circle D and see what he has.
