This thread is scaring me away from modifying the truck. And I though f-bodies had weak drivetrains. Fukn cheap *** GM.

No, it uses a regular paper gasket, but you can get a stud kit to use instead of the stock bolt assy.

I've done the easy things to strengthen my setup (shiftkit, locker, added fluid capacity) but until I actually get a "Built" tranny AND bullet proof my u-joints/driveshafts/rear end, I have to be real with myself, knowing at some point these things will go south.

but thats the name of the game
yep, ill wory about it after it breaks

Problem is, if the rear goes out it can easily take a tranny with it. That's a very expensive rear end to replace, if that happens.

That's what happened to me. The differential carrier exploded, fragments bound the ring and pinion and that exploded the sprag in the transmission. With the 14-bolt rear end and full build of the 4L60-E, that day was worth about $4.5k and three months of downtime. That was a long time ago....

It's funny how things progress, I no longer have that transmission because even the fully built one eventually expired some 30k miles later. The rear end also failed almost a year ago due to crappy parts used by DriveTrain Direct to build it. The housing, gears, and Eaton posi were salvaged to build a better 10.5" 14 bolt rear end. Even the driveshaft is different now than back then.

ya I remember getting ready to do a burnout in my old truck (89 rclb w/ peg leg). Right as I started to stall it up, just b4 the tire started to spin ...BOOM...clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk....Busted the third member in half and 3 days at Randy's Ring and Pinion and $1700 later, I was drifting with my new eaton posi !!! I was fun, I need to get one in my truck now cuz I can only drift going around this one corner on the freeway and about 75-80 mph when it rains. I miss hanging it out around town.
