No, The OD lockup on the PI with the check ball/flow limiter is like another gear. You do not need to IMO.

I've got it about 90% back together. Just have to button up the exhaust, front driveshaft, skid plates, add fluids and try it out. Should be moving tomorrow...... hopefully. Benchpressing the transfer case up and in is becoming easy.

The online instructions say it is optional to remove the check ball for firmer lockups. I won't be pulling the trans just to do that anyway. Didn't get any instructions in the box with the TC.

Just found out that the bolts that came with the TC are the wrong size. M8 instead of M10 and too long. Online instructions say M10 X 1.5 X 12mm. I was using the cut down OEM bolts before but they are too long now(about 18mm). Wouldn't be able to pull the TC tight against the flexplate before they bottomed out. Couldn't find anything shorter than 20mm tonight.

this has been a very interesting thread. Good stuff!

KySilverado: have you talked to a GM tranny guy just to triangulate the data a little more?
And from reading this through, I am correct in saying both PI and FLT say the extra space is OK?

That's what Chuck said when he called to tell me to pull out the spacers after speaking with PI. He said the OEM and PI TCs both measured up the same and that the old guidelines don't apply to the newer trannies/TCs. That means that the converter has to be pulled out 5/16" to mate with the flexplate. Previous guidelines said no more than 1/8". PI is supposed to be updating their instructions. Your PI converter should measure 6 5/8" as pictured in my post above showing the OEM TC.

so 6 5/8" is the critical tolerance? I need to go measure my verter

What I'll probably end up doing is measure my stock converter when I remove it and directly compare that to PI measurement and go from there.

thanks again for the very useful info guys

That was the relevant dimension I'm told. Didn't say exactly what it was but my OEM TC measures 6 5/8". Too late to measure my PI TC as the trans is already installed. I was told that they are the same.

No I've not talked to any GM tranny guys. Don't know any.. few and far between in my area.

Yes, speaking with Chuck who had had a discussion with PI, they now say the space is okay.

Oh, and thanks for the Good stuff. Coming from the good stuff king
