I have a built tranny with a dacco 2800 stall, and it just took a dump 3days ago... I took it to my tranny guy since its still under warranty and he said the clutches are definately gone, but he also said that the TC is gone too??? he did this decision by giving it a test drive...
these are the symtoms...
it was running fairly well, I could just notice very little slippage at normal driving and under WOT acceleration my 1-2 and 2-3 would not shift until my truck would redline... but under normal driving (take off real easy after each stop) my tranny temp would get real hot!! I was only 1-2miles away from home and I drove it like that real easy... then the next day I took it to the tranny guy and temp stayed fairly normal while cruising on the freeway, but was very very very slowly going up while cruising at around 70mph... by the time I took the exit, the tranny temp was 210... then by the time I got to his shop the tranny temp was 240, and still rising... his shop is only about 2miles from the freeway but there is about 3 red lights...
he said when a TC is giving up it will start heating up the tranny?? is this true??
anyhow he is repairing the transmission under warranty and I just ordered a fuddle....
my question is did the TC cause the tranny to start slipping or is it the other way around??

Given the Temperature Scenerio that you described, it would defiently NOT be the Torque Converter. Granted any fluid coupling generates heat, but not anywhere near that much.
Now, slipping clutches/bands inside the transmission can quickly boil the fluid around it.
As for the health of the TC, if the clutches in teh transmission self-distructed there is a good chance that the TC is contaiminated with friction materal/steel. Placing that converter in a new/rebult transmission is only going to contaminate the new one. So either getting the TC professionally cleaned or a new one is the only good choice there.

Not sure really, call your TC's manufacturer, as they actually will open the case and clean the whole unit out. Probably gonna run 100+$ Unfortuantly, opening the TC up is the only way to "flush" the unit.

the last converter I had cleaned cost me right at $100.. I took it to a local machine shop in Beaumont. sounds like both may be gone to me as well... its time to step up that stall size huh??? how bout 3200?!?!?!?
