How does lockup on a tc work? what controls\ activates it?

do you mean mechanically, like how the lock up is physically applied or do you mean how is it adjusted with tuning?

 

Both. I was trying to explain it to my dad but i relized I don't fully understand it myself.

 

Well electrically when certain parameters (like throttle and speed) are met a solenoid is activated inside the transmission. When the solenoid is activated the pump applies pressure to the clutches inside the torque converter to hold them together, and therefore "lock the converter".
