Default Starting engine without transfer case bolted up?

Might be a stupid question, and I think the answer is no LOL, but can I start my engine without having my t-case bolted to the trans? Reason I ask..I removed a 4.8/60e from my truck and put a 6L/80e in and wanted to make sure the engine runs okay. Im currently waiting on the merchant auto pump housing for my np246 and wont have that all back together until next weekend.

Thanks all

You can just unbolt the torque converter and push it back away from the flex plate. Should give you enough room to let the engine run by itself.

faackk. I'll probably just wait and be patient I guess. I would think the snout of the converter could wear in the flexplate pilot if i did that

I had to plug in my trans for the motor to start and run. the ecu/tcm would not allow the truck to crank unless it was plugged into the trans. I did not have the trans bolted to the truck. it was just sitting in the tunnel area

my engine and trans is in my truck, its the transfer case that is not in yet. I didn't want to start the engine and have the trans pump fluid out the rear onto the floor, but I wanted to make sure the junkyard 6L and 4L80e runs while I still have some warranty on it

Well incase some other poor buggar is wondering this same question one day and finds my thread...

I started the engine without the transfer case bolted up and did not get an oil bath out the back of the trans lmao. I didn't take it out of park mind you...but all is well.

Was gonna say if it's in park you're fine. The tail shaft only turns if it isn't in park, and the tail shaft turns the t case

I ran it through all the gears without the case bolted. It was fine. Truck is fully back together now, runs great. Had to wait for the Merchant Automotive 10001 pump housing for my t-case for a few weeks.

You can do that, but I would caution against it. Also when you do that and you go back to park it usually grinds on the park pawl pretty good cause the driveshaft isnt there to keep the shafts from spinning. But sounds like you already got what you needed done
