Stall choices

Circle Ds are a bit looser. I got a 3000 expecting it to be in the range as the yank, and it was much looser. A 3200 Circle D will likely be what you're looking for, but smaller than a 278.

Nothing is worth a swap unless it's for the smaller size 9.x" converters. Those heavy comparable to stock 10.x" converters will all perform very similar. You need a smaller diameter converter for a real gain. I cut .5" off my 1/4 with a 3.42-3.90 TT3000-SS3600 swap.
My SS3600 should be for sale here shortly.

I went from a circle d 278mm 3200, to a yank pt3200 and well worth it to me low end feel completly diffrent and the shift extensions are great and the fact that Im able to tow is just great just the other day i towed a 9x5 trailer with 2 scoops of gravel....and it was fine and dandy ...1scoop= 1 yard
and not tom ention i got thr pt3200 for $325 with less then 4k miles from a local member

If your trans takes a dump, cant you just send it back for a cut open and washout?
Any TC shop should be able to do this for a minimal charge. PI gives you a free stall adjustment within the 1st 2 years, maybe instead of a stall adjustment, you could get a washout instead?
