Shock relocation in front of the diff?

No. Caltracs use the axle wrap and redirect the energy.
I havent tried pitting shocks in frt of the diff myself, but with a good double adjustable shock i dont see why it would matter if it was in frt or rear of the diff.
I assume the car you tested this in had a single adj shock and it just happened to behave better with the shock up front. A DA shock can be set to control the suspension however necessary.
In conclusion i think the shock matters more than the shock position. Put it in front if it fits your application better. The shock is doing the same exact job in both locations.

I know heavychevy ext cab turbo truck has the rear shocks located toward the front. Mine are toward the rear, as that was how all the truck guys were relocating them. Either way should work i would think.
