I bought a switch back when my 4wd wasnt working, went home tested it out, brought it back, by the way your problem definently sounds like the switch, if it was your encoder turning the truck on and off probably would do nothing

 

man this crap sucks, I could care less about a switch, but since Ive been in CT the tranny is on order, the switch, I need new o2's possibly MAF, and the wifes cherokee has been messing up constantly...Ive never seen the check engine light on either of these vehicles until we got up here! Im pretty sure thats proof they dont like the cold

its your switch or the actuator that actually changes it from 4-2-4.

iirc, another member had the same problem, and it was the switch.
Test drive a 4wd one (take another person with you, or 2-they usually let me test drive alone, but when you do that, usually they will allow it) and swap it.

floor shifter ftw! lols.
