I'm going to drain the fluid from the TC through a cloth. I'm thinking if there is anything failing in the TC I would see some signs in the fluid? If I don't find anything obvious when I pull the trans. I am going to send the TC back to PI for a look.

How are you going to get fluid from the TC without pulling the trans?

Trans is coming out to be replaced with an FLT 4l65E Lvl5 and TCI flexplate.

So you are debating whether or not to toss in the converter or send it out?

Pretty much. If I don't find obvious problems with the flexplate or bolts when I tear into it I will send the TC back and have them look at it. Spoke with PI today and they will take care of it if needed.

Finally got under the truck tonight and unbolted the TC. TC bolts were tight. Flexplate looks good, rings like a new cast bell. Fired it up and no noise. Has to be the Torque Converter. It will be going back to PI. Going ahead and pulling the Trans. FLT called and the built tranny is on its way.

I was going to mention, the best way to tell how much metal you have in your trans is to diesect your trans filter, you can take it apart with a screw driver and pliers, see whats is in the matting.Ballbearings in a tin can sound is what a converter failing can sound like.As you mentioned.
