Just to keep it all in perspective, in the early 1960's standard Chevy passenger cars were geared to about 23 MPH per 1000 RPM in top gear. For 80 MPH this works out to a hair under 3500 rpm, so I'd say you're safe.

2700 rpms for 3600 miles: I'd be more concerned about gas mileage than engine wear.

Regular maintenance and no abuse, your engine will a long time.
