Doesn't the middle spring carry some load? So if it's removed wouldn't the spring become softer? As my truck sits now, the overload spring isn't doing anything, so I figure removing it would drop the rear the same amount as the thickness of the overload leaf, and won't change the ride too much. I'm looking for a minimal drop in the rear, like 1/2" to level it out. Sounds like removing any of the leafs would drop it too much.

 

Do the over load unless you want a slightly spongier ride.

 

leaving the overload and removing the middle spring is a way better ride than the opposite. i've done both with my truck

 

Stock hangers, stock shackles, removed middle spring, lowers around 5-6 inches

 

and you can still haul stuff

 

I know this is an old post but im liking your drop by just removing the middle spring. I have an 88 R10 suburban an i have been looking for a way to lower itwith out cutting the frame. this sounds like a must try.

 

I don’t have anything to add for your 1988 Suburban, but I did recently pull the middle spring on my 2005 RCSB Z71, as being discussed in this thread. It dropped mine around 3.5”. It did soften the ride some, which was what I was looking to do. Before, with my Viking shocks even set to full soft, the ride was still very stiff. Thought that info might be helpful if someone else stumbles upon this thread.

 

Are you saying that by removing the "middle" leafspring that you achieved 5-6" of drop?
