Default Rebuild or replace 04 transfercase?

My 04 CC NBS transfercase started making some loud noise the other day. It actually locked up the rear tires doing 60 down the road for a second or two, but I was able to get it back home. Drove it down the road a couple days later and it's still making some awful noise, but it didn't lock up.

Should I rebuild or replace?

Transmission shop wants $1900 to rebuild. I can get one at a JY for roughly $200-$300.

Can I rebuild this myself? I rebuilt the rear with 4.56's and a Detroit TrueTrac about a year ago, so if its remotely possible, I think I could do it, but I do not know what all it would entail.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Replace. If it locked up the tires then there is something really wrong and probably quite a few parts damaged. If it all was started because of pump rub then who knows how long it was run dry!

Get the junk yard one. Rebuild. You're more than capable and there are a few threads on how to do it. I did it!

Get a kit that replaces bearings, frictions, steels, chain, filter and get a kit to stop pump case rub. I bet you could get it all done for $500.
