Default Rear Axle Assembly Swap

On a 95 Silverado std box 4x4 I am replacing a blown out rear differential ( open diff) assy with another unit that has the same ratio but with a locker (closed diff). Will this change the pinion position , or more specifically the drive shaft length ?? Will the locker have the same issue with the C clip coming out allowing the cross pin to come out and bind with the carrier ?? What is the most effective way to mod or prevent this.
Thanks,
