Question Opinion on gearing

Right now i'm running 3.42 on 265/70/17 (31.6") and it pulls good but i know a lower gear ratio would improve my take off dramatically and also improve my off-road performance also.
I plan on eventually going up to 285/70/17 (32.7")

Most of my driving is around town with a lot of stop and go, probably 70%, but i'd hate to lose too much economy on the highway.

What gear ratio would you recomend for me and what kind of LSD or Locker should i install while i'm in there? Again, about 70% of my driving is around town, back and forth to work, 29% highway and the rest...

Thanks, Trever.

The favorite LSD here is the Eaton and the favorite locker seems to be the Detroit. You have to decide if you want an LSD or a true locker.

Gears are more of a personal preference, but you're probably looking at either 3.73's or 4.10's with the tires you have now.

With close to a 33" tire, however, it's a no-brainer, 4.10's are what you'd need to keep it real.

BTW, nice avatar, if I was a cartoon guy I'd hit it.

Thanks!
If my RPM is 1850 at 70 mph now (in OD), it'll be up to about 2300 rpm with the 4.10's?

You can use this calculator to get your RPMs in a given gear at a given speed. Plug in your chosen gears, tire size, etc.

4L60E gears are as follows:

1st: 3.06
2nd: 1.63
3rd: 1.00
4th: 0.70

Default gear change

are you planning on doing both front and rear gears? I know in jeeps you have to change both or your 4 wheel drive will not work. just something to look into.

Do not get an eaton if you are going to do offroading it sucks I ahve one and it sucks offroad but it is awesome on the road two black marks as far as the eye can see

If you are going for offroad also then drop in a detroit or the truetrac the truetrac ahs alot mre locking capability for offroad and will exhibit better manners onroad. The detroit locker has gotten alot better at its on road charcteristics though. Moregrip has one and says its not bad at all. Thats what I will be going with later on down the road and get rid of my eaton.

Dont do too much off-road right now- but dont want to limit my future habits. The Detroit looks good except it's not recomended for towing!
What is comparable to the G80 yet stronger?
