ohh no...
so im drivin, and this guy in an older model silverado pulls up and starts reving. Naturally, i go on green and pull from him but then it goes to second. He fly's pased me while i sit there gaining every 10 mph in like 4 seconnds. it will not pull at all in 2nd, but once its in 3rd and 4th or if i play with second a bit it finally kickes in. I hate slippage. So how much do you all think the average rebuild cost of my tranny will be? If i don't plan on anything other than mainly stock (maybe a small shot of N2o later 100 shot most) think i should build it a bit or just get it fixed and put a shift kit on? Alos, how long till you think ill be sitting on the side of the road?

Id probably take it easy on the truck if its slipping that bad. If you plan on spraying on it, id probably shop around and try to get you a good deal on a built 4l60e or maybe even a 4l80e. Not that you would absolutely need all the strength but it wouldnt hurt. At least you wont ever have to mess with it again. Thats what im going to do if mine goes out.

Its rare to break a torq converter. It'll probably be the internal clutches going out. 4l60E's are garbage. They can't handle any thing much over 300 hp consistantly. I've rebuilt a few, and they are nothing more than an electronic 700R4. The 4L80e is what comes in most 2500 series trucks and is comparable to the turbo 400 in durability. We had so many problems with the 4l60's that I just put in a turbo 350 in the car. A shift kit won't fix it, neither will bumping up the line pressure. I've tried it.

only prob is, i can't afford a 4L80e right now. Is it worth upgrading it to a 4L65e or just rebuilding it to get it fixed untill summer when i can afford a 4L80e? what are price of each (4l60e-4L65e)

i get sideways going into second.. does that mean im "slipping" lol jk.
Honestly... the difference in a bascially stock rebuilt tranny and a performance built tranny is like 300-400 bucks more for the performance built one. (depending on the shop of course)...
Those trannys from FLP that are around 1800-2200 is about how much it'll cost for a tranny shop to rebuild yours... not sure if that includes a torque converter or not.
If you rebuild it mostly stock w/ the shift kit, vette servo, and the biggest tranny cooler you can find (like $60bucks) than i'd say that rebuild would be around 1600-1800.

It also depends on what kind of driving you do. If you frequent the track, then an overdrive transmission is always going to give you problems. You can rebuild the 60E, but it's a can of worms. If you have a lot of HP then the extra rotational drag won't be noticeable. An old Chevelle ran pretty much the same ET's on the turbo 350 and 400 with a small block 350. If you like overdrive, go with a built 4l80e, maybe repair the 60e for now. However, I'm sure you can find a used 80e esp form a salvage yard and have a shop change the gearing in it and update the sprag, and put in a shift kit. You won't be sorry you did it.

Or if you like spending money go with a turbo 400 or a 4l80e and a gear vendors. You'll get your OD any not nearly as much wear on the tranny, for the cost of having two trannies.
