nv4500 clutch issues
#1
2001 chevy 2500HD 6.0L, 5-speed. leaking fluid from the inspection hole in the bottom of trans and every other day the pedel pressure dissapates unless the pump the hell out of it and add fluid. my question is, do these have a hydrualic release bearing like a ford ranger? none of the parts stores in my area carry a clutch kit in stock, but they all say they do not come with the release bearing (which is what i really need). they sell it seperate, but they dont have one in stock so i cant check it out to see. anyone had to replace their clutch/slave cylinder? where is the best place to buy a replacement and how much did it run you? its gonna run me $350 labor to have it replaced (no way im gonna do this myself, dont have a lift and not trying to break my back/arms letting the trans/tcase down) so im trying to keep it fairly cheap. ive only found one clutch kit on ebay, but im scared of using cheap junk from ebay.

sounds like a bad slave cyl. as for labor on the nv4500 idk if its an external or internal slave... when i had my 90 with the nv3500 i had an external, i swapped mine out for 50 bucks and about 15 min of my time.

All the chain parts stores have a very detailed web page.

The throw out is internal on the NV4500. You get the throw out bearing and slave cylinder as an assembly. Its a pretty cheesy POS and if the bearing locks up it just shreds the slave cylinder. Two little bolts hold it to the transmission case and they don't need to be very tight but some lock tite is a very good idea here. Also the 4500 will unbolt from the bell housing with just 4 big bolts and really its a very easy transmission to pull to replace the throw out bearing.

Yes the slave/bearing is all one assembly and it is internal. Its a plastic piece and isn't too bad, but I havent had a bearing lock up on me...
As for replacing it, it isn't hard to unbolt the 4 bolts from the trans to the bell, or unbolting the 2 bolts to remove the old slave and install the new one. The time consuming and difficult part is taking apart everything else and dealing with moving around a couple hundred pound trans/transfercase combo.
Heres some photos.
