Default NP263HD to NP261HD conversion

I recently bought a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 6.0 with a 4L80E tranny and the transfer case has been changed out from an NP263HD to an NP261HD. The guy I bought if from said the auto 4wd was a problem and he thought the manual transfer case would solve the problem. But he wired it up thinking the electric would still work somehow. Well turns out my pushbutton console no longer works and I can't get it out of 4 HI now. I am new to the 4 wheel drive scene and am learning everything i can about transfer cases and transmissions. Can anyone tell me if I should just leave the manual transfer case in place and put a lever on the floor or just get the NP263HD and keep the auto 4wd option?
