From what I've seen 2wd come with aluminum (longer) shafts and 4wd/awd come with steel shorter shafts. So yeah it does matter.

6" dad gum Stock shaft is approx .06 thick. Most aftermarket aluminum shafts are around double that at .125.

Smart man

You'd get further in life if you knew when to shut your pie hole and listen.
Yep, from what I recall mine is .125

I just ordered a 4" .125 for my awd delete project. I plan on documenting the process for anyone in the future. Just gotta tie up some loose ends, should have around 50 photos of the swap, including lengths and weights of everything.

What are your thoughts on steel vs aluminum for these trucks for the rear shaft? Took a quick measurement to see what ballpark it'll be in. Looks like it'll be around 66-67" long center to center of u joints. The stock one doesn't fit it is too long. Thanks guys!

Steel is more rotating mass, aluminum is much lighter, that length you probably want to go with al for weight... I would send a request to a driveshaft builder... Mine is almost 73" and they are recommending a 5" aluminum shaft...

This.

I have a really short DS in my Yukon. 45 inches? My custom shaft for over 130mph with my gearing and short length allowed me to save $$ and go steel.

Much loner and you'll need aluminum.

Ya I called 2 places by me Friday. One does steel and one does aluminum. The aluminum they said they would do a 5" shaft and 0.120" wall thickness but they want $750 for it... I called the dss they could do aluminum same spec shaft for $550 but a 2.5-3 week wait time. The place local to me for the steel or aluminum both said a 2 day turn around time. So I guess I'll stick with aluminum even though the steel shaft was $400. Gotta decide if I wanna wait 3 weeks for my truck to be done and save $200 or get it this coming week and spend $200 more haha

Anyone have any idea how much of a difference it makes in the seat of the pants between an aluminum shaft versus a steel shaft?
