Default Need opion's for gear set-up..Which one is best?

I am new to here and I have a 2005 2WD Chevy LS Crew Cab 5.3 ( 20 inch wheels )with 3.23 gear in it. I am about to change the gear over to a 3.42 or 3.73 and would like to know who has this set-up and what is your fuel mileage with the truck empty and pulling a load. I road race street bike 1000cc and 600cc. I pull a 18 foot v-nose enclosed trailer with a/c and three race bike's and tools. With the 3.23 gear that I have now sucks for pulling, stays in 3rd gear and gets 11 mpg if there's no wind in FL.

So please give me your personal opinion and facts with trucks that are similar,
What gear do you have and what is your mpg empty and with load..
I am keeping this truck, I know diesel would be better, but the right gear will make this truck just right.

Thanks Again for all help.

Been there done that , about 3 weeks ago. I went with 4.10's and a valu-trac from Rons Machining services(site sponser). I wouldnt consider 3.42's or 3.73's since you tow and have heavy wheels. I have gotten 14 mpg mixed city/highway but I'm running a cammed lq4/4l80e. Best I ever got with the stock 5.3/4l60e and 3.23's was 15mpg. 4.10's you wont regret it!!!

I'm running 4.11 in my cc. rpm is still around 2k when rolling 60-65 mph. i have a set of used motive gear 3.90 if you would like them. those are some good all around gears. there are very similar to 4.10/4.11

Well now it looks like my mind is changing to higher then a 3.73. Really wasn't thinking it was going to need it, as of now the truck floats between 3rd and 4th at 70mph more on the 3rd side. Seems like a little more it would hang in there, but maybe more then I thought. Keep all the help up, this is why I posted, in order to get the gear correct the first time.

It would really help if you posted your tire size instead of wheel size. Give us the numbers on the sidewall as well as an actual measurement of a tire with the trucks weight on it.

height is 30.50, 20x10.....285/50r20
I have a POS superchip programmer and when I put the tire size in to change it from stock to the correct height, the speedo is incorrect by 4 to 5 mph at 70..
When I leave the programmer at stock size the speedo is 1 mph off ( correct ).
I found that a little weird. I used three different GPS to confirm. There is your info you requested. Stock size was 245/70 or75 r17..
Thanks for any help..
