Id really like to see the pics of these. are you sure these are your gears hes talkin about. Im leaning to not being set up right possibly to not enough to clearance or none at all. I think the 500 mile breakin is a joke. theres alot of trailored cars out there that on have no break in when they go wot. the gears in my car I put 5 season ago, when i say when i broke them in was 2-3 laps at 1/2-3/4 throttle before i went wot.

Holy crap! Lots of replys. To answer a few of the questions I saw....They were GM gears, I told the builder when he set them up that they would more than likely see full throttle pretty quick. In other words, break in mile (especially 500) is out of the question. I've put a total of 4000 miles on this thing in the last 2 years. He told me that wouldn't be a problem and told me to run them in on the jack stands and then let cool completely. I didn't do it but I did run it down the road about two miles and hammered on it a couple of times and let it cool. Maybe I hammered on it too hard. I'll be breaking in the 4.10's on the stand, we'll see if they last longer. I switch to 4.10's cause I was running out of RPM. I was crossing the traps at about 6800 and I just made some changes and picked up what I estimate to be at least 125 rwhp so I would definately be running out of gear. With the 4.10 and locked converter I should be good for 140mph+, so I've got some room to grow.
As far as the builder, I used him several times in the past and I've never officially blown up a rearend. That speaks for his quality of work. As far as his honesty.....I don't know.

Gotta see pics as 'trashed' is a little too vague to know exactly what happened.
The question I have is, is this a 8.6" 10-bolt we're talking about? If so, then that's your problem. The pinion on a 4.56 10-bolt gear set starts life already compromised.
