are you spinning the tires when you get on it?

what should happen, is one tire will start to slip, maybe for say half a second, then you will hear a sort of clunk and the 2nd tire should start spinning then. The G80s are loud when they engage from what I have read. I can't tell you much more, since I dont have a G80

G80's aren't loud, if it's loud then it's broke and a matter of time until it falls apart.

+1 anything that sounds out of the ordinary loud probably means something is on its way out.

Mine is starting to make the same kinda noise every now and then?? Never had any noise from me G80 locking so I wouldn't suspect that to be the problem with either of our vehicles. I was gonna try packing the slip yoke with a bit of grease and see if that helped but ain't got around to it yet. Could be u-joints as well?? I got 84xxx miles on mine and it's a 99 so might be about time for some???

You could wait and see what happens, but sometimes other folks' Grenade-80's go out in a spectacular fashion, taking the gears with them. So I make it like playing Russian Roulette. It could either be just fine for the next 100k miles, break but still be able to drive the truck around just with a one tire fire, or take out the whole damn thing and blow chunks through the rear end cover making the truck inoperable. You never know.

I've only got 62k miles on my truck and I'm pining for a LSD set-up ASAP.
