Locking and unlocking of the converter is controlled by the PCM. When running at WOT, an unlocked converter allows the engine to pull easier because the converter is still multiplying torque. Once the converter is locked it's no longer multiplying torque and then it's turning the same speed as the output of the tranny. I usually like a converter to remain unlocked at WOT until I reach my set shift point for my setup. It will not hurt your truck but it will help your performance at WOT and throttle response as well. For heavy loads or pulling you need to allow the converter to lock-up though.

i have a nelson tune. I tow a trailer with a polaris ranger about every-other weekend and I sometimes pull a 24ft monterey boat. Should i ask allen to unlock my converter at wot? It should be safe right?

I would if it was me, then you could have him leave your converter alone when tow/haul is on that way you can still tow stuff.

A un-locked converter make A TON more heat than a locked converter. I like have my converter lock-up asap at wot, but that is just me.
