i was reading in a magazine that if you tow that you shouldnt run a locking rear end. why is this ? they were talking about runnning a solid locker like detroit i guess? they said it puts way too much stress on your drivetrain?

I have been towing heavy trailers for years and I prefer a locking diff. If you get into any mud or even a slick road you are done for if you are a peg leg. It is almost impossable to back a trailer with a peg leg if it is wet or raining. I have never killed a rear end in a passenger truck pulling. I have killed a few rear ends but never with a trailer always doing somthing stupid. I burned up a rear diff in a big truck once l locking and unlocking it in a pasture trying to get a cow trailer out. I am sure there is more strain on it with a heavy load but it cant be much.

I could see where my Powertrax would be bad for towing. When accelerating around sharp turns slowly it will stay locked and could break an axle, especially with the added weight on the rear. Most automatic lockers are torque activated, like my Powertrax. That said, I do tow with mine, but usually try to be careful when on high traction surfaces.
A limited slip would be the best thing for towing. The Detroit TruTrac would also be an acceptable choice.
