Question Just picked up a 05 z71 Tahoe and got some question.

Last Saturday I purchased a clean one owner 05 z71 Tahoe with a 5.3 and 130k miles. Wanting to throw a turbo on it and she what kind of motivation I can get out of this tank.

I realize the 4l60e is just one of the weak links in the drive line and wondered how big of a pita it's to swap to a 4l80e. I want to keep the thing 4wd.

Obviously the transmission and transferase will be my first upgrades before thrown some boost to it.

I'm going to go ahead and also get a HPTuner kit for it about the time I'm doing the trans and transfer case upgrade and freshening.

This is my third Tahoe (02,04 and now this 05 z71).

Power range I'd like to get would be in the 600hp range (for now) but build the drive line to handle more when I want to set up to a 6.0 or 6.2.

Thanks for and advise!

Shannon

I see you're from yellowbullet. I'm a trans noob and they've helped me a ton with my 4l80e rebuild.

That said, look at my 02 Yukon. 4l80e swap thread. It has all you'll need. I'm only suffering because of a string of bad luck. That and having to learn so much.

Yeah snuck in through the bullet.

I read you complete thread. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. But after reading your problems I'm going to look for a newer style 4l80e.

Kinda worried about the transfercase that will be the next week link. When I bought the Tahoe I made the dealer service it and put a new actuator/motor in it but.....

The tcase isn't that big of an issue, I run my autotrac nv246 (RPO NP8) behind my blown rig and its working well.

I'd do an 80e with the 34 element sprag and shift kit, should live in that sort of combo. Of course inspect all the clutches, bushings, and steels, dual feed direct drum (usually in the shift kit) and for piece of mind you might want to look into an input shaft upgrade.

I did the 80e swap in my 05 Silverado using efi live, I had a weird (12606961) operating system and I just had to go to an earlier version that supports the 80e segment, and of course you'll need to fully tune everything else anyway. If you have any questions about the swap don't be afraid to send a message.

Thanks man! It will be spring or early summer before I get to it. I'm going to start collecting parts.

Wish this truck was a flexfuel but I guess that's something else to add to the list of things to do but then again you got to love the smell of c16. LoL
