Default Inner tie-rod replacement for NBS???

I went to the alignment shop yesterday because of a vibration coming from the front. When the shop had it up in the air the guy showed me that there was some play in the front end. I could tell that it was coming from my rack and pinion boot and the guy confirmed that the inner tie rods seem to be hammered and needed to be replaced. Has anyone done this? Does it require any special tools and where did you get your parts. I was told it is a fairly common item to fail on these trucks but after 30K miles?
