Can I cut the brace, (behind the transmission crossmember) for the torsion bars or is it under stress from the bars? Can I cut the torsion bars?

What are you trying to accomplish?

If you have to cut something cut the torsion bar.

 

I've cut that cross member on a 95 z71, and its under pressure, scared the hell out of me

 

It is under stress.

FWIW The torsion bars are forged and are hard to cut with anything other then a torch.

 

I think the only time the Tbar member ISNT under pressure is when the truck is lifted comepletely off the ground.

 

Trying to accomplish: I'm trying to pull the motor/transmission/transfer case, but I cen't get the tailshaft to drop below the support for thos torsion bars...

I need to find out for certain...I need to cut something this evening.

By the way, the truck has been rolled, so it's going to the scrap yard.

 

The torsion bars are under load even with the front wheels off the ground. Please don't cut anything.....danger there buddy. Remove the torsion bars first.

Do you think you could snag me a few small items before it goes to the junk yard? I need 1 rear bedside/wheelwell brace (single bar w/ bolt on each end) and a few other misc small items..Let me know I will gladly pay you!

 

I've chopped right through them with a 4.5" cut off wheel.

Take the t case off then pull the engine and trans. Or rent a torsion bar tool or use a c clamp and take the torsion keys out then slide the bars forward and take that bolts out of the t bar crossmember. But it would be much faster and easier to take the t case out.

Depends on the keys and how much its cranked. With my drop keys cranked down it wasnt.
