Default I don't know what it could be....

Well I am lost in the souce with this problem that I am having. Ok here it is, I was merging onto 95 and I went WOT and it just reved and nothing else, did it about 40 and when I was doing 85 I WOT it to just do it, and it did the same thing. I stoped off to see my mech. and he looked at it. He put the truck into gear and power break it, not to do a burn out, and it went into gear and the drive shaft would turn and the tires would not. You can hear like a metal on metal grinding sound coming for the rear. I took of the cover to see what was going on, all the teeth were there, the inside guts look ok. I went to the parts store and while it was there it started to down poor rain, got home and wanted to get the cover on as quick as possible. Will have to take a look at it a nother day and get some pics. It is fine in 4 wheel drive. I am going to try to get it onto a lift tomorrow and see what is going on.

Thanks for the help
RJ

When I have the rear jacked up, I know that one tire is going to spin one way and the other the other way, but is there a lot of slack before the other tire spins?

obviously somethings wrong with the gears, could your pinion be loose? check the nut on the housing. are they factory or aftermarket?

+1 for the bearings. If all your teeth are on the ring then it sounds like the bearings are gone allowing the pinion to move away from the ring gear, hints the metal grinding sound.

one of my buddies tried to power break is truck the other day and it did the same thing. Driveshaft would just spin and it would make a horrible metal grinding sound. he took it to the shop and they said its his left spyder gear and something else i cant remember.
