Default How much hp/tq for 4l80e limits

I have a 4l80e in my truck now, it has a shift kit and 3600 stall. Don't know specs on shift kit. I'm building a new motor for my truck, other than temps and installing a bigger trans cooler what are the 80e's weak points? How much hp/tq can it handle ? And what will be the first things that are most likely to go out ? Thanks the help!

Most suggest the 80e with the hd-2 kit is good for around 700+ that number would naturally decrease in a heavy platform such as a crew cab 4x4.

What is all in the hd2 kit? And the trans is in a 1500 ext cab, short bed, 2wd. I'm waiting on heads, and turbo parts but the motor is a 408 shooting for around 900whp Thanks for the info I will look into the hd2 more

So ur saying a shift kit is all that is needed to withstand 900hp? And a upgraded trans cooler. The input/tail shaft will hold?

No I was implying a shift kit should get you by on 750 wheel. You should ask Atomic or Smokeshow about a high horsepower build...better yet pm Gilbert@Ace transmissions or Jakes they should be able to help.

Will do, thanks for the info. But I am surprised that shift kit will get it to hold up to 700whp ! This is my fist gm, ls build other than offroad and I gotta say gm parts continue to blow my mind what they can hold up to!

Remember, the 80e was designed to be in a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck pulling a load. When you put it in a lighter vehicle it will take a lot of abuse in stock form. You will probably need more than a shift kit to hold your goal of 900 whp though.

If you plan to lock the converter at wide open you will need some billet parts, there are allot of internal mods that can be done to strengthen a 80e it just depends how far you wanna go.

I blew the direct clutch twice. If you go with the HD2 kit, drill the valve body to the largest size. Use Kolene steels and good clutches.
