Default How do I make a tough 10 bolt?

I've heard that putting in decent lockers will strengthen things up a bit for the 10 bolt. Is that true? Anything else that can be done? I don't want to put a bunch of time and money into my diffs to have them blow apart 3k later. I need something that can handle 550+ hp/tq.

If thats out of the range, where the heck do you find the 14 bolt SFAs?

A strong posi will help; ie Eaton, Auburn

You can also install a girdle which is supposed to make things more rigid and pre load the bearings.

I have not heard of too many people breaking rear ends with good posi units. I broke my gears when the G80 grenaded.

It should be able to hold around 500+ hp/tq, but launching on slicks with a high stall may bring the 10 bolt closer to death much faster. I would put an Eaton in and worry about the 4L60 if thats the trans. you are going to run.

Get a t/a diff cover from thunder racing it pre-loads the bearings and makes it alot stronger. I have an eaton and the cover and am keeping my fingers crossed. I already have the tranny part covered but if you dont you tranny will be next in line.

My example is a little extreme, what with 38" tires, but I had my 10-bolt built, all new bearings, seals, 4.88 gears, auburn lsd, and about 5-6k miles later, the auburn blew up. I wasn't really hard on it, yet I didn't baby it. I'm now driving around with the g80 back in there and building a 6-lug 14bolt sf. I personally would try and find a 14 sf, I got mine for $200

I agree going 14 bolt for strength.
I am however quite partial to my 14bolt FF axle in which a full detroit will someday reside.

Do you have to do anything to install the T/A cover? I heard you had to tap some holes, it may have been BS though.

All you have to do is get different bolts as the ones supplied with the cover arn't a metric thread.

Yeah they are adiff thread than the ones on the housing the morons that installed my cover half *** tapped the housing fo rth e new bolts instead of just getting the right ones for the job. Thats why I hardly evr let anybody touch my **** cause when somebody does it gets messed up. I would feel better about messing it up myself.
