Default How to check trans fluid level?

After pulling my transmission to do my rear main seal I dumped a metric *** ton of tranny fluid on the floor. I have no idea how much I lost, probably a quart or two. How do I go about checking the trans fluid level? I heard that you are supposed to drive it which I don't particularly want to do since the fluid level is so low. Part of me is thinking just drain it all out and fill it back up but if it is more than unscrewing the drain plug and pouring down the trans dipstick I don't really want to do that.

Any ideas?

Park on level surface. Hot, in neutral, running. Pull the stick, wipe, put in & remove, level should be in the part of the stick with the cross hatch marks. Width of that area is about a half quart.

So should I not be worried about driving it that low on trans fluid to get it up to temp?

you can check it cold. Fill it to the "cold full" then drive it around

check it cold RIGHT when you start it up

should be 1/4 or 3/8" away from the *full* mark
if it is not...you need to add

once you get it within 1/4" you can baby it around the block to get some temp in it. Then check

Also...calibrate the dipstick. Drop the pan and make sure the "full" mark is in the right spot.
I've seen factory dipsticks off by 2+ qts either way. Sometimes over full. Sometimes under full.

just read that @RB04Av said to check it hot in neutral, but I am certain GM "hydramatics" are all in "park"

Let me find something to prove or dispel that. Controversy exists lmao

Given the failure rate of the early GMT-800 parking brake "neutral" is not a good idea. Unless you want to make the latest Fail-Army YouTube video, chasing a truck down the street with a shop towel in hand.
