hose from rearend?

Default hose from rearend?

there is a rubber hose that comes from the top of the rearend and runs along the side of truck somewhere. found it dragging this morning. i did a search site is not running to well. what is this hose for and do? i just figured that when i lowered my truck my exhaust pipe burned threw it.. need to get a new bent pipe. but whats the rubber hose for?

It's a vent tube. The hose is to extend it up high so that water wouldn't get into the diff. if submerged in water.
