Default Got 4l80 apart... need opinions on clutches...

I finally got around to getting the trans apart today and to my surprise the clutches look very good (so I think). I have only gotten a look at the two bands, intermediate clutches and direct clutches. I will probably pull the fowards apart tomorrow night to look at them. This trans supposedly only had 3000 miles on it when I got it and I have only put ~2000 on it. If they forwards are in good shape, does anyone see the need to completely disassemble all the assemblies and R&R them?

btw... I know I need a new converter, which I have, as the front cover of the one in there was blue and purple where all the paint had blistered off of it. Evidently the clutch failed and everything in the converter got really hot.

If the frictions got hot, would the steels not have gotten just as hot? There is no sign of the steels getting hot at all.

I have another Fuddle sitting in the garage ready to go in. Although I believe the converter clutch failed, I am not completely sure it is all the converter's fault. When I pulled the O-ring off the input shaft, it was flattened and torn in two spots like it had rolled and been pinched.

I just finished disassembling the forward and 4th assemblies and came across something interesting. The forward clutches look exactly like the direct and intermediate clutches as far as color and texture but the 4th clutches are different. They are a lighter color and have groves across them (like wear indicators). Should the other clutches be the same color and have these groves?

No the over run and the OD clutches are a tan paper material in a factory unit. Being that you found the turbine shaft o'ring damaged, I think you found your problem with the lockup clutch. Not that I'm a big fan of Puddle converters but that is the obvious reason why it failed. Good luck. Vince

Thanks Vince. Could you tell anything about the clutches and steels from the pics? Do you think I would have a problem reusing these clutches & steels or should I go ahead and change them out while it's apart? Although this is my first trans to open up, there is no to very minimal noticeable wear on any of the parts.
