Default gears

Im changing the gears on my 2004 5.3 regular cab, im undecided if i should get 3.73's or 3.90's, I do quite alot of high and city driving ( about 500-600 miles per week) its about 50/50 city/hwy. Which ones should fit me better, also i have the stock American General tires. Also I do not want noisy gears, so what brand should i go with?

Thanks in advance.

Go with the OEM gears they are the quitest of all! I think you'll be happy with the 3:73's good for city and highway driving! If you decide with the 3:90s you'll have to go with an aftermarket gears!

people say that aftermarket gears are noisy but i have yet to hear either set of mine make a noise. maybe i set mine up well. dunno, but i don't have a problem with richmonds or motive and such.

i recommend doing the 3.90 over the 3.73's. no mileage diff to be seen for most people.

Call Randy's Ring and Pinion (ringpinion.com) in Washington, they should be able to hook you up with a set of OEM/AAM 3.73's for somewhere in the neighborhood of $200-$230.

IMO 3.73's are the best gear for all-around balance between performance, driveability, and mileage. I wish I had kept mine in.

Question

What size ten bolt rearend is in the 04-05 gm 2wd trucks?

I should know this but don't?
I'm considering the 3.73 or 3.90 swap as well for my 05'.

I have a set of Precesion 3:90's, no noise what so ever, I love them, good out of the hole good on the highway. I turn about 2300 at 75-80 mph. Last trip I took in the truck I got about 20 mpg.

Just go 4.10's, you'll wish you did. I jumped from 3.42's to Richmond 3.90's and the mileage loss was negligable at best. I do about 70% highway though too. But, I am jumping up to 4.10's next week. Got all the parts in, just need to get it done. The richmonds are noisy, I mean they have quieted down a lot, but I can still hear them over my exhaust at 40-50mph. If I have my cutouts open though, its a different story.
