...I agree with Dock Rocker completely!!! If someone knows what their doing and is called a professional, then when you install gears and set-up a rear end, they should not whine. Setting up a rear end is an art form and should be done with great precision. Shimming a gear properly will take care of the whine of an improperly shimmed gear set. And if you've got a locker make sure they used the proper amount of Limited Slip Additive, cause' when it's low they will make a grinding sound.

So check out the work really good.

Not necessarily,

some gears that are cut to be stronger can have some whine to them even when set up to factory spec, usually only at a certain RPM range when the gears harmonics kick in, 4.10's are right on the edge of cut design between quietness and strength

Yes I have had both and I REALLY like the 4:10s. Dont be scared to do the swap. If you find a reputable shop and have them do the install you will be ok. Just dont have some shade tree mechanic do it.

Richmond gears SUCK!!! every set I have ever installed whine, and I set them up perfectly... but the numerically higher the gear set, the more likely they are to whine.

Guys, I had 4:10 Richmond gears in my last truck,a dn I can say without a doubt that I had no gear noise. In reverse you had the ever present whine but other tham that...silent.
