gear whine

well the guys from the performance shop called and said my gears are in(motive 4.10) he said they are probably going to make some noise. i was just wondering how noisy are they going to be? ive never heard gear whine in a silverado. also are 3.73s noisy as well? i did a search and didnt come up with too much

if they whine then they are not set up correctly.

:judge:...I agree with Dock Rocker completely!!! If someone knows what their doing and is called a professional, then when you install gears and set-up a rear end, they should not whine. Setting up a rear end is an art form and should be done with great precision. Shimming a gear properly will take care of the whine of an improperly shimmed gear set. And if you've got a locker make sure they used the proper amount of Limited Slip Additive, cause' when it's low they will make a grinding sound.

So check out the work really good.

Not necessarily,

some gears that are cut to be stronger can have some whine to them even when set up to factory spec, usually only at a certain RPM range when the gears harmonics kick in, 4.10's are right on the edge of cut design between quietness and strength

hmmm.. what if i went with 3.73s? the difference between 3.73 and 4.10 cant be that much can it?

Yes I have had both and I REALLY like the 4:10s. Dont be scared to do the swap. If you find a reputable shop and have them do the install you will be ok. Just dont have some shade tree mechanic do it.

im gonna agree with zzebes. my installer who i think is one of the best told me straight up that the richmond 4.56's were gonna make noise period. and they do between a certain rpm.

Richmond gears SUCK!!! every set I have ever installed whine, and I set them up perfectly... but the numerically higher the gear set, the more likely they are to whine.

Torque_Wrench 10-24-2007 02:22 PM

Guys, I had 4:10 Richmond gears in my last truck,a dn I can say without a doubt that I had no gear noise. In reverse you had the ever present whine but other tham that...silent.

My Richmond 3.90's whined at 50-60 MPH from day one.
