Default Gear swap Question

I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 with a 6 inch lift and 35" tires. It has 3.73 gears and I was thinking of swapping 4.88 gears and putting a locker in the rear. What difference will there be going from a 3.73 to a 4.88 gear? Also I think that my pickup has a 10 bolt, 8.6" rear end with 28 spline. How do I find out exactly what it is and what gears to order? Any info would help thanks.

All I really need to know is what rear end is in my pickup. Is it an 8.5 or 8.6 inch rear end? Does anyone know how to find this out?

4.88's a nice gear for that wheel/lift/tire combination.
